Flat Foot Reconstruction in Milton Keynes, Northampton & Banbury

In short

Flat foot reconstruction restores the shape of a collapsing arch by realigning the heel bone and supporting or replacing the main inner tendon. It is used for adult acquired flatfoot that has failed orthotic treatment, and the procedure is matched to whether the deformity is still flexible.

When is flat foot reconstruction considered?

Reconstruction is considered for a painful, flexible adult acquired flatfoot that continues to progress despite orthotics, supportive footwear and physiotherapy.

Can I avoid surgery?

Non-surgical options come first. Early flatfoot is usually managed with custom orthotics, motion-control footwear, calf stretching, posterior tibial tendon strengthening and sometimes a boot for painful flares.

What happens during the procedure

1

The heel bone is realigned to improve the foot position

2

A tendon transfer supports the weakened inner tendon

3

Additional bone or ligament procedures are added when needed

4

The foot is protected in plaster or a boot while the reconstruction heals

Recovery timeline

  • First 6 weeks — usually non-weight-bearing
  • 6–12 weeks — gradual protected weight-bearing begins
  • 3–6 months — walking strength and footwear tolerance improve
  • 9–12 months — full recovery and endurance continue to build

Risks & complications

Risks include infection, blood clots, nerve irritation, delayed bone healing, stiffness, under-correction or over-correction and ongoing swelling. Fixed deformity may need fusion rather than reconstruction.

Costs & insurance

Self-pay consultations are £250 (new) and £175 (follow-up). The procedure price is confirmed after your consultation. We are recognised by all the main insurers including Bupa, AXA Health, Vitality, Aviva and Cigna.

Questions & answers

Orthotics can support the arch and slow progression, but they do not usually reverse an established adult acquired flatfoot.

No. Reconstruction aims to realign a flexible foot while preserving joints. Fusion is used when the deformity is fixed or arthritic.

Most patients need several months of protected recovery, with full improvement often taking 9 to 12 months.

The aim is to restore a more functional arch and heel alignment, reducing pain and improving walking.
