Ankle · for ankle arthritis

Ankle Fusion in Milton Keynes, Northampton & Banbury

In short

An ankle fusion gives reliable, lasting pain relief for a worn ankle joint, often through a keyhole approach. The ankle no longer bends up and down, but the foot's other joints take over much of that movement, and most people walk comfortably afterwards.

When is ankle fusion considered?

Ankle fusion is considered for painful end-stage ankle arthritis when injections, bracing, footwear changes and activity modification no longer give enough relief.

Can I avoid surgery?

Non-surgical options come first. Non-surgical care includes rocker-sole footwear, ankle bracing, physiotherapy, low-impact exercise, pain relief and image-guided injections.

What happens during the procedure

1

The worn cartilage is removed from the ankle joint

2

The bones are positioned for comfortable walking

3

Screws or plates hold the ankle while it fuses

4

The leg is protected in plaster or a boot until the bones heal

Recovery timeline

  • First 6–10 weeks — usually protected or non-weight-bearing
  • 10–12 weeks — weight-bearing increases if X-rays show healing
  • 3–6 months — walking distance and strength build
  • 6–12 months — full recovery and swelling improvement continue

Risks & complications

Risks include infection, non-union, hardware irritation, nerve symptoms, blood clots, altered gait and stress on nearby joints over time.

Costs & insurance

Self-pay consultations are £250 (new) and £175 (follow-up). The procedure price is confirmed after your consultation. We are recognised by all the main insurers including Bupa, AXA Health, Vitality, Aviva and Cigna.

Questions & answers

The ankle joint itself will not move, but surrounding foot joints provide enough movement for most people to walk comfortably.

Fusion is durable and suits many active patients. Replacement preserves movement but is not right for everyone.

Some cases can be done arthroscopically, depending on deformity, bone quality and previous surgery.

Driving depends on side, comfort, braking control and insurer guidance. It is often not until weight-bearing and control have returned.
