Lateral Ligament Reconstruction in Milton Keynes, Northampton & Banbury

In short

A lateral ligament reconstruction (Broström) tightens the ligaments on the outside of the ankle to stop recurrent sprains and giving way. It is offered for chronic instability that has not settled after a proper course of rehabilitation.

When is lateral ligament reconstruction considered?

Reconstruction is considered when the ankle repeatedly gives way after sprains despite a structured rehabilitation programme, and examination or imaging confirms lateral ligament instability.

Can I avoid surgery?

Non-surgical options come first. Most patients should complete balance training, strengthening, sport-specific rehabilitation, bracing or taping before surgery is considered.

What happens during the procedure

1

The stretched or torn lateral ligaments are identified

2

The ligaments are tightened and repaired back to bone

3

Additional reinforcement is added when tissue quality requires it

4

The ankle is protected while the repair heals

Recovery timeline

  • First 2 weeks — elevation and wound care
  • 2–6 weeks — boot protection and gradual weight-bearing
  • 6–12 weeks — physiotherapy restores movement, balance and strength
  • 3–6 months — return to running and sport-specific work when stable

Risks & complications

Risks include infection, stiffness, nerve irritation, persistent instability, over-tightness, swelling and blood clots. Good rehabilitation is essential for a strong result.
